【交換留学先徹底研究】University of British Columbia（ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学）

ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学（UBC）が候補に入ると、英語のスコアが届くのか、寮に入れるのかが気になりますよね。
私は、英語の授業で専門の外まで幅広く学びたい人にとって、UBCは北米で最初に検討していい交換留学先だと思っています。
ただ、いちばんの壁は技能ごとの最低点がある英語の要件です。

UBCへの推薦は3月15日まで、本人の出願は4月1日までです（9月か1月に始まる人、2026/27年度）。
大学の寮に入れるのは交換留学生の50〜60%で、抽選で決まります。

1. 大学の特徴

UBCは1908年にマギル大学の分校として生まれ、1915年に独立したブリティッシュ・コロンビア州立の総合大学です。
キャンパスはバンクーバーと、内陸のケロウナにあるオカナガンの2つで、交換留学ではどちらかを選びます。
バンクーバーのキャンパスは市の西の端にあり、海と森に囲まれた半島の先にあります。

文系、理系、ビジネス、教育、林学まで分野がそろっていて、交換留学生も学部と大学院の授業の中から、交換留学生に開いているものを取れます。
アジアとのつながりが強い大学で、キャンパスには日本庭園もあります（7章）。

交換留学先として使える環境を、学術、履修、英語、住居の4項目で星にしました。
大学の知名度ではなく交換留学生が実際に選べる授業と生活の条件で付けています。

星は、科目の登録や住居を約束するものではありません。

個人的には、星3つの「住居の確保しやすさ」がこの大学を選ぶかどうかの分かれ目だと思っています。

2. 授業と履修

UBCの授業はふつう1つ3 creditsで、交換留学生は1学期に9〜15 credits（3〜5科目）を取ります。
9 credits以上で全日制の学生になり、大学の寮に住む人は全日制を保つ必要があります。
上限は1学期15 creditsなので、所属大学が求める単位数と合うかを先に確かめてください。

多くの学部が交換留学生に開いていますが、人気の分野には制限があります。
コンピュータサイエンス（CPSC）の200番台以上は、所属大学でコンピュータサイエンスを専攻している学生が対象です。
CPSCは1学期3つまでで、まず待機リストに入るのがふつうです。
CPSC 310は交換留学生は取れず、CPSCを取りたい人は1回目の推薦（1月15日〜3月15日）で推薦されている必要があります。
CPSCの授業を希望に入れるなら、CPSC以外の代わりの授業も一緒に用意しておくと安心です。

ビジネス（Sauder）や工学にも交換留学生向けの別の制限があり、法学は法学の協定で来る人しか取れません。
授業は5月中旬に届く希望調査で選び、最終の科目選択の締切は6月8日（1月から始まる人は10月25日）です。
ArtsとScienceの授業（数学と経済を除く）が満員のときは、着いてから変更を申請できます。
着いてから最初の2週間の動き方は履修登録で失敗しないための記事にまとめています。

授業の進め方は日本と大きく違います。
毎回の授業に読む課題があり、成績は宿題、小テスト、中間試験、期末試験の積み上げで決まります。
5科目にすると読む量がかなり多くなるので、1学期目は4科目くらいから始めるのも手です。

ここに並べたのは、UBCの授業カタログ（Academic Calendar）に載っている学部の授業名です。
カタログには毎学期開かれるとは限らない授業も載っているので、開講は時間割（Workday）で確かめます。
ビジネス（Sauder）の授業は、Sauderとの協定で来た人が1学期12 creditsまで取れます。
ほかの協定で来た人も申し込めますが、席は限られていて保証されません。
工学の授業は所属大学で工学を学んでいる人、コンピュータサイエンスの200番台以上は所属大学でコンピュータサイエンスを専攻している人が対象です。
建築のスタジオ（設計の演習）は1回目の推薦で申し込む必要があるので、ここにはスタジオ以外の授業だけを載せています。
UBCは制限が変わることがあると書いているので、出願の前にGo Globalの最新の案内で確かめてください。

3. 語学要件

UBCの授業はほぼすべて英語で、英語が母語でない交換留学生は次のどれかが必要です。

IELTS（Academic）は6.5以上で、どの技能も6.0以上
TOEFL iBTは90以上で、Reading 22、Listening 22、Writing 21、Speaking 21以上
ケンブリッジ英語検定はB2 Firstで180以上
PTE Academicは65以上

スコアは2年以内のもので、UBCとの協定で免除されている場合を除いて全員に求められます。
合計点だけでなく、すべての技能で最低点を超えている必要があるのが、UBCのいちばん高い壁です。
TOEICは使えないので、TOEICで応募できる大学と比べている人はTOEICだけで応募できるかの記事も参考にしてください。
IELTSの点数ごとに行ける大学の違いはIELTSのスコア別の記事で比べられます。

所属大学が独自の条件を足していることもあります。
たとえば慶應義塾大学の案内では、学部生はGPA 3.0以上が必要です。
大学院の授業は、分野によってさらに高い英語の点数が求められます。

個人的には、出願の半年前までにIELTSかTOEFLを一度受けて、いちばん低い技能を確かめておくのがおすすめです。
合計点が足りていても、1つの技能だけが届かないと出願できないからです。

4. 出願と学期の日程

2026/27年度の出願の日程は次のとおりです。

所属大学からの推薦は1月15日から3月15日まで（9月開始、1月開始、通年）
本人の出願と書類の提出は4月1日まで
1月開始だけの2回目の募集は、推薦が7月1日から8月25日、出願が9月15日まで

所属大学の学内選考はこの推薦より前に終わっている必要があります。
9月から行くなら、日本の大学の前の年の秋から冬に学内選考があると考えておくのが安全です。

出願したあとの流れは9月開始の場合で次のとおりです（かっこ内は1月開始）。

5月中旬（10月初め）に科目の希望調査が届く
5月1日（10月1日）までに寮を申し込む
6月8日（10月25日）までに最終の科目を選ぶ
9月5日（1月4日）に寮に入れるようになる
9月8日（1月5日）にオリエンテーションと授業が始まる
授業は12月7日（4月12日）に終わり、試験は12月11日から22日（4月16日から27日）

学期の途中には11月に3日間のReading Break、2月に1週間のReading Weekがあります。
受入許可が届くまでに日本側でやることは、学内選考に通った後の手続きの記事で時系列にまとめています。

5. 住まいと費用

UBCの学内の住まいは保証されていません。
大学の寮の案内を受けられるのは交換留学生の50〜60%で、申し込んだ人の中から抽選で決まります。
UBCは寮に入れなかったときの住まいの計画も用意しておくよう強く勧めています。
申込みは出願のあとで、9月開始なら5月1日、1月開始なら10月1日が締切です。

学外の部屋は、UBCの案内で1学期4,800〜8,000カナダドルが目安です。
バンクーバーは家賃が高い街で、大学の周りはとくに高くなります。
寮に入れなかったときに慌てないよう、部屋を見る前にお金を送らない、契約書を確かめるといった基本を守ってください。

住まいのほかに見ておきたい費用は次の4つです。

授業料はふつう所属大学に払います。
保険は全員がiMEDに入り、1学期だけの人は338カナダドルと手数料10.76カナダドルです。
6か月以上いる人は最初の3か月をiMEDで過ごしたあと州の保険（MSP）に入り、月75カナダドルほどかかります。
6か月を超えて学ぶ人は、カナダの学生ビザ（Study Permit）が必要です。

UBCは住まい、食費、本、学生の費用、身の回りの支出を合わせて、1学期6,900〜11,000カナダドルを生活費の目安にしています。

6. 国と街のくらし

同じ記事では、カナダで協定が多い大学の1つにUBCを挙げています。
9月に始まる人は過ごしやすい秋に生活を立ち上げられますが、1月に始まる人は雨の多い冬から始まることになります。
日本人が多い街なので、英語を使う時間を増やしたい人は、クラブや寮の行事に早めに入っておくのがおすすめです。

7. ゆかりのある人物

UBCは日本とのゆかりが深い大学です。

キャンパスの「新渡戸記念庭園」は『武士道』の著者で国際連盟の事務次長も務めた新渡戸稲造を記念する日本庭園です。
新渡戸は1933年にカナダでの会議の帰りにビクトリアで亡くなり、のちにUBCに庭園が作られました。
いまの庭園は1960年に完成し、日本の造園家の森歓之助が設計しています。

1991年には立命館大学との学術交流プログラムが始まりました。
毎年100人の立命館の学生がUBCで1年間学ぶプログラムとして始まり、2025年で35年になります。
そのための寮として1992年に開いた「Ritsumeikan-UBC House」は、いまは200人の学生が住む寮として使われています。

一方で、1942年には日系カナダ人の学生76人が強制移動で学業を断たれた歴史もあり、UBCはのちにこの学生たちに名誉学位を贈りました。
2016年には、日系で初めての学長として小野三太（Santa J. Ono）が就任しています。

海外の有名な卒業生では、カナダの首相を務めたジャスティン・トルドーが1998年にUBCで教育学の学士を取っています。

個人的には、出発前に新渡戸の『武士道』を読んでおくと、庭園を歩いたときに日本をどう説明するかを考えるきっかけになると思います。
