シドニー大学が候補に入ると、南半球の学期が日本の予定と合うのか、家賃の高いシドニーで住む場所を確保できるのかが気になりますよね。
私は、英語で幅広い分野の授業を取りながら、住まいの心配を減らして留学したい人にとって、シドニー大学はオーストラリアで最初に検討していい交換留学先だと思っています。
ただ、いちばんの壁は家賃を中心にした生活費の高さです。

2027年のSemester 1の出願締切は2026年11月30日、Semester 2は2027年4月30日です（大学の目安）。
締切までに申し込んで条件を満たせば、キャンパスから徒歩20分以内の学生寮が保証されます。

1. 大学の特徴

シドニー大学は1850年に州の法律で創立した公立大学で、大学は「オーストラリアで最初の大学」と紹介しています。
メインのキャンパスはシドニー中心部の南西にあるCamperdown/Darlingtonで、建築、人文・社会科学、ビジネス、工学、法、医学・健康、理学の学部が集まっています。
大学の案内では中心部まで車で10分、歩いて25分ほどです。

学生は7万人以上で、2,500以上の授業（unit of study）があります。
QS世界大学ランキング2027では28位で、分野別では哲学、法、英文学、会計・ファイナンス、建築などが上位に入っています。

交換留学先として使える環境を、学術、履修、英語、住居の4項目で星にしました。
大学の知名度ではなく交換留学生が実際に選べる授業と生活の条件で付けています。

星は、科目の登録や住居を約束するものではありません。

個人的には、星4つの「住居の確保しやすさ」がこの大学を選ぶかどうかの分かれ目だと思っています。

2. 授業と履修

シドニー大学の交換留学生は1学期に18〜24 credit pointsを取ります。
多くの授業は1つ6 credit pointsで、全日制の標準は24 credit points、ふつうは4科目です。
18 credit points（3科目）にするには所属大学の許可が必要なので、日本で認めてもらう単位数と合わせて決めてください。

授業の多くは、交換留学生だけのクラスではなく、正規の学生と一緒に受けます。
大学院の医学、歯学、心理は交換留学生に開いていません。
法、獣医、薬学、Media & Communicationsの授業は、所属大学でその分野の学位を取っている学生だけが対象です。
看護、理学療法、建築のスタジオ、音楽院の実技なども、専攻やポートフォリオ、オーディションが条件になります。
法やメディアの授業を目当てにするなら、所属大学の専攻が条件に合うかを最初に確かめておくと安心です。

出願のときに希望する授業の一覧を出し、正式な登録はSemester 1なら11月下旬から、Semester 2なら6月中旬から始まります。
登録の変更は学期の1週目の終わりまでです。
着いてから最初の2週間の動き方は履修登録で失敗しないための記事にまとめています。

成績は85点以上がHigh Distinction、75点以上がDistinction、65点以上がCredit、50点以上がPassで、50点未満は不合格です。
成績証明書はSemester 1の人には8月まで、Semester 2の人には1月までに届きます。

ここに並べたのは、大学が交換留学生向けに出している授業の一覧（2027年の開講を反映したもの）に載っていた授業名です。
法の分野はビジネススクールのビジネス法と、文学部などの法に関わる授業から選んでいて、法学部の授業ではありません。
メディア、看護、理学療法、建築のスタジオ、音楽院の実技、大学院の授業は、専攻などの条件があるので載せていません。
一覧に載っていても毎年開かれるとは限らないので、出願の前にその年の一覧で確かめてください。

3. 語学要件

シドニー大学が交換留学生に求める英語は、次のとおりです。

IELTS（Academic）は総合6.5以上で、どの技能も6.0以上
TOEFL iBTは、大学のページが「TOEFL Australia」と呼ぶ版だけで、点数は換算表で決まる
TOEFLのHome EditionとIELTS Onlineは使えない

試験は、授業が始まる日の時点で受けてから2年未満のものが必要です。
TOEICとDuolingoは、大学の英語要件のページに載っていません。
語学要件の全体の相場はIELTSのスコア別の記事とTOEICだけで応募できるかの記事で比べられます。

所属大学が独自の条件を足していることもあります。
たとえば早稲田大学が以前に掲載していた情報では、TOEFL iBT 85（技能別の最低点あり）かIELTS 6.5（各6.0）、GPA 3.0が目安でした。
授業や学部によって、別の英語要件がある場合もあります。

個人的には、TOEFLで出す人は、受ける前にどの種類のTOEFLが認められるかを大学に確かめておくのがおすすめです。
IELTSなら基準がはっきりしているので、どの技能も6.0を下回らないかを先に見ておくと準備しやすくなります。

4. 出願と学期の日程

2027年の日程は次のとおりです（大学の目安で、変わることがあります）。

Semester 1は、出願が2026年11月30日まで、オリエンテーションが2月15日、授業が2月22日に始まり、試験は6月19日に終わる
Semester 2は、出願が2027年4月30日まで、オリエンテーションが7月26日、授業が8月2日に始まり、試験は11月27日に終わる

出願の前に、所属大学からの推薦が必要です。
2026年の入学分では、推薦の締切は出願の約2週間前（Semester 1は2025年11月15日、Semester 2は2026年4月15日）でした。
所属大学の学内選考はこの推薦より前に終わっている必要があります。

学期は日本と逆の南半球の暦なので、日本の春学期や秋学期とずれます。
Semester 2なら7月下旬に着いてオリエンテーションを受け、11月末に試験が終わる流れです。
北半球の春学期に合わせた「Spring Friendly」という別のプログラムもありますが、交換で行く通常の学期とは別で、締切も早くなります。
受入許可が届くまでに日本側でやることは、学内選考に通った後の手続きの記事で時系列にまとめています。

5. 住まいと費用

シドニー大学は交換留学生に、キャンパスから徒歩20分以内の学生寮を保証しています。
条件は締切までに申し込み、申込の時点で大学の基準を満たしていることです。
建物、部屋の種類、家賃の価格帯は選べないので、保証があっても家賃は高めになることがあります。
交換留学生向けには、オリエンテーションの前の週から最終試験の翌週までの20週間の特別な契約があります。

大学の案内では、週の家賃は大学の寮で397〜688豪ドル、食事付きのカレッジで519〜725豪ドル、民間の学生寮で439〜723豪ドルが目安です（2024年の料金）。
大学の寮のQueen Mary Buildingは、標準の個室で週382豪ドルです。
大学はシドニーの民間の賃貸市場を「とても競争が激しい」と書いているので、保証を使える人は使ったほうが安全です。

住まいのほかに見ておきたい費用は次の4つです。

授業料は所属大学に払い、シドニー大学には払いません。
学生ビザ（subclass 500）が必要で、申請料は2026年7月1日から2,500豪ドルに上がりました。
学生ビザの人は留学生向けの保険（OSHC）が必須で、大学の案内では6か月で400豪ドルが目安です。
電車やバスのOpalカードの学生割引は、留学生は原則として使えません。

大学の案内では、住まい、食費、交通、携帯、娯楽を合わせた生活費は週785〜1,280豪ドルが目安です。

6. 国と街のくらし

国別の勉強・文化・くらしの記事から、オーストラリアの項目のうちシドニーの生活に関係するものを抜き出しました。
交換留学生の目線で、独断と偏見でまとめた箇条書きです。

1学期3〜4科目で、1科目の密度が濃い
講義とチュートリアルがセットで、出席を取られるのはチュートリアル
毎週の小テスト、グループ課題、エッセイ、中間、期末の積み上げ型
期末で最低点を取らないと、他が良くても落ちる科目がある
最初の数か月はオージー英語の速さとアクセントが聞き取れない
留学生が多く、特に中国系が多い大学もある
家賃がやばい、シドニーは寮でも月20万円超え
外食とカフェは日本の2〜3倍

大学の案内では、シドニーの夏（12〜2月）は18〜26度で蒸し暑く、冬（6〜8月）は8〜17度です。
週末はバスでボンダイビーチへ、電車でブルーマウンテンズへ出かけられると大学は紹介しています。
留学生と地元の学生を組ませるメンター制度（MATES）もあり、学期の初めにメールで案内が届くので、参加しておくと友達を作るきっかけになります。

7. ゆかりのある人物

日本人でシドニー大学を卒業したことを公表している著名人は、今回調べた範囲では大学や公的な資料で確かめられませんでした。
そのかわり、シドニー大学には日本とのつながりが深い学科があります。

日本学の学科は1917年にでき、大学は「オーストラリアで最も古いアジアの言語と文化の拠点の1つ」と紹介しています。
2007年からは作家の名前を取った「井上靖賞」を毎年出していて、井上靖記念文化財団が全集28巻を大学の図書館に寄贈しました。
大学の記録によると、両大学は1985年に文化協定を結び、早稲田大学の西原春夫がシドニー大学の名誉博士号を受けています。

海外の有名な卒業生では、オーストラリアの首相8人がシドニー大学で学んでいます。
映画監督のジェーン・カンピオン、南極探検家のダグラス・モーソン、人工内耳を開発したグレアム・クラークも卒業生です。

個人的には、日本学の授業やイベントに顔を出すと、日本に関心のある現地の学生とつながりやすい大学だと思います。

8. 日本からの応募ルート

冒頭の6大学は各大学が公式に出している協定一覧で、シドニー大学との全学の交換留学を確かめられた大学です。
東京大学ではUSTEP、慶應義塾大学では全塾枠の交換留学として載っています。
東京大学のUSTEPでは、2027-28年以降、派遣される学生のうち年1名が寮費1学期分を免除される奨学金の対象になる可能性があります。

協定があっても、毎年募集があるとは限りません。
所属大学の募集要項で、シドニー大学の枠と、Semester 1とSemester 2のどちらから行けるかを確かめてください。
授業料を払って行くStudy Abroadという別の道もあり、2027年は24 credit pointsで13,000豪ドルが目安です。
