デューク大学が気になったとき、まず知りたいのは日本の大学から授業料を払わずに交換留学で行けるのかですよね。
私は、学部生がデュークに行くなら授業料を払うVisiting International Student Program（VIS）が基本の道で、その費用を用意できる人にとっては、アメリカのトップ校の授業と寮生活を体験できる有力な選択肢だと思っています。
ただし秋学期だけで授業料が38,870ドルかかり、春学期だけの留学はできません。

日本側で全学協定を確かめられた九州大学も、デュークの項目に【授業料徴収】と書いています。
授業料の奨学金が出る交換は、大学院の協定のほうにあります。

1. 大学の特徴

デューク大学はアメリカ南東部のノースカロライナ州ダーラムにある研究大学です。
起源は1838年の学校で、1892年にTrinity Collegeがダーラムへ移り、1924年にDuke Universityになりました。
2025年秋の学生は学部生6,525人、大学院生と専門職の学生が10,800人で、合わせて17,325人です。

大学は自らを、研究資金でアメリカ第5位の研究大学だと紹介しています。
学生か教員としてデュークにかかわったノーベル賞の受賞者は16人で、学部生の4年での卒業率は91%です。
大学のページによると、NCAAの全国優勝は17回です。
大学の土地は8,693エーカーあり、そのうち7,044エーカーは研究林のDuke Forestです。
工学部（Pratt）は1939年、ビジネススクール（Fuqua）は1969年、環境学部（Nicholas）は1991年、公共政策大学院（Sanford）は2009年にできました。

交換留学先として使える環境を、学術、履修、英語、住居の4項目で星にしました。
大学の知名度ではなく交換留学生が実際に選べる授業と生活の条件で付けていて、費用はこの星に入れていません。

星は、科目の登録や住居を約束するものではありません。

個人的には、デュークを選ぶかどうかの分かれ目は星よりも、1学期で5万ドルを超える費用を用意できるかだと思っています。

2. 授業と履修

VISの学生は学部の教養学部（Trinity College of Arts and Sciences）か工学部（Pratt）に、学位を取らない学生として入ります。
1学期に取れる学術の授業は4つまでで、ほかに体育などの学術以外の授業を1〜2つ取れます。
フルタイムの学生でいるには、1学期に4つの授業を取る必要があります。

デュークの1科目はふつうの大学の4単位（semester credit hours）にあたり、大学のページは4科目で30 ECTSと見積もっています。
日本の大学でいくつの単位になるかは、所属大学が決めます。

取れるのは学部の授業だけです。
ビジネススクール（Fuqua）、法科大学院（Law School）、医学部（Medical School）などの大学院や専門職の授業は取れません。
学期中に取れるのは、ダーラムのキャンパスで開かれる授業だけです。
ビジネスや法を学びたい人は、学部の経済や政治の授業で何を学べるかを先に見ておくと安心です。

2026年秋学期の授業の追加と取り消しの締切は9月4日、2027年春学期は1月20日です。
着いてからの動き方は履修登録で失敗しないための記事にまとめています。
成績は学期の終わりに学内のシステム（DukeHub）で見られ、正式な成績証明書は本人が大学に申し込みます。

ここに並べたのは、教養学部の各学科がサイトに出している授業一覧、コンピュータサイエンス学科の2026年秋学期の開講一覧、工学部の電気・電子のラボのサイトなどに載っていた学部の授業名です。
ビジネスの欄はビジネススクールではなく、社会学や経済学など学部の授業から集めました。
法の欄も法科大学院ではなく学部の授業で、機械や土木の工学は学部の授業一覧を読み込めなかったので載せていません。
学科の一覧は毎学期すべて開かれるとは限らないので、学期ごとの開講はDukeHubの授業検索で確かめてください。
前提科目がある授業や、定員のある授業も多くあります。

3. 語学要件

VISの英語の基準はTOEFL iBT 100以上（紙の試験は600以上）か、IELTS 7.0以上です。
スコアは出願のときにスキャンして出します。

技能ごとの最低点は、VISのページに見当たりません。
TOEICとDuolingoは、VISのページに載っていません。
対象はふつう2年生か3年生で、英語を十分に使える学生です。

語学要件の相場はIELTSのスコア別の記事とTOEICだけで応募できるかの記事で比べられます。

個人的には、TOEFL 100かIELTS 7.0に届いていない人は、出願の1年前には受験の計画を立てておくのがおすすめです。
九州大学のデュークの項目では語学の欄も【授業料徴収】とだけ書かれていて、点数は載っていません。
所属大学を通して行く人は、学内の条件を所属大学の募集要項で確かめてください。

4. 出願と学期の日程

VISで行ける期間は秋学期だけか、秋と春の1年です。
春学期だけの出願は、キャンパスの寮が足りないという理由で受け付けていません。
延長や、デュークの4年制の学位の課程への編入もできません。

締切は、Global Partnerではない大学の学生が2月1日、Global Partnerの学生が3月1日か個別に決めた日です。
2月1日までに出願を終えた人には、3月15日までに結果が届きます。
出願は大学のポータル（MyGlobalEd）から行い、英語以外の書類には公式の翻訳と、資金の証明が要ります。

2026-2027年度の学部の日程は次のとおりです。

秋学期：授業は2026年8月24日から12月4日まで、期末試験は12月9日から14日まで
春学期：授業は2027年1月6日から4月21日まで、期末試験は4月26日から5月1日まで

日本の大学でいえば秋学期にあたるので、帰国してからの履修や就活の予定と合わせて考えておく必要があります。
受入許可が届くまでに日本側でやることは、学内選考に通った後の手続きの記事で時系列にまとめています。

5. 住まいと費用

VISの学生はキャンパスの西側（West Campus）の寮の2人部屋かスイートに入ります。
同じ部屋の相手は、なるべくVIS以外の学生になるよう大学が割り当てます。
寮に住む学生はミールプランを買う必要があり、食事ができる場所は50以上あります。
寮は学期中だけで、冬休みや夏休みには使えません。

大学の見積もりでは、2026年秋学期の主な費用は次のとおりです（米ドル）。

授業料：38,870
寮（2人部屋）：5,780
ミールプラン：2,971〜4,231
本と個人の出費：1,705
大学の保険（必須）：1,806
健康の料金と学生の料金：計1,376.50

ここに挙げた秋学期の費用を足すと、約52,509〜53,769ドルになります（大学のページに合計はなく、筆者の計算です）。
学部のVISの学生には、デュークの奨学金や財政の支援は出ません。
大学の保険はF-1かJ-1のビザの留学生は必ず入るもので、日本で保険に入っていても外せません。
保険は通年の4,290ドルで計算され、秋学期だけの学生は春の分の日割りの返金を求める形です。

ビザはJ-1で、デュークは短期のF-1を出せなくなったと書いています。
J-1の書類（DS-2019）は合格してデポジットを払い、資金の書類を出したあとに届きます。
資金の少なくとも一部は、政府や所属大学の奨学金など家族以外から出ていることが条件です。
アメリカの留学生の管理システムの料金（SEVIS費）は、J-1で220ドルです。

6. 国と街のくらし

国別の勉強・文化・くらしの記事から、アメリカの項目のうちデュークの生活に関係するものを抜き出しました。

大学のページは、ダーラムの道路や交通は車での移動を前提にしていると書いています。
それでも車なしで暮らす学生は多く、キャンパスの間は大学のバスで移動できます。
大学が走らせる無料の送迎（Duke Vans）は、学期中の月曜から土曜の夜18時30分から深夜2時まで走っています。
学生は無料のパス（GoPass）で、地域のバスのGoTriangleとGoRaleighに乗れます。
ダーラム市の路線バス（GoDurham）も無料で走っていますが、無料の期間は大学のページによって書き方が違います。

ダーラム市は富山市と1989年から姉妹都市で、キャンパスの植物園（Duke Gardens）には2007年にできた姉妹都市のあずまやがあります。

7. ゆかりのある人物

デュークの図書館の展示によると、広島出身の上野ヤスコ（Yasuko Ueno）は1925年に卒業しました。
新しくできたDuke Universityを卒業した、知られている限り最初のアジア系の学生です。

2024年4月には、岸田文雄首相（当時）の妻、岸田裕子さんがDuke Gardensを訪れました。
植物園の中の日本庭園にある姉妹都市のあずまやと茶室で、茶会が開かれています。

海外で知られた卒業生では、Appleのティム・クックが1988年にデュークのビジネススクールでMBAを取りました。
メリンダ・フレンチ・ゲイツは1986年に学部でコンピュータサイエンスと経済学を学んで卒業し、翌年にMBAも取っています。

個人的には、富山との姉妹都市のあずまやは、日本から来た学生がダーラムで最初に足を運びたくなる場所だと思います。

8. 日本からの応募ルート

デュークには、日本の学部生が授業料を払わずに1学期行ける交換は、今回調べた範囲では見つかりませんでした。
カードに挙げた3件は、学部生がデュークに行くときの日本側の窓口です。

九州大学は、全学の協定で交換学生4名の枠が書かれていますが、同じ項目に【授業料徴収】とあります。
期間は1年か秋学期だけで、項目に書かれた申請の締切は4月1日です。
国際基督教大学（ICU）と日本スタディ・アブロード・ファンデーション（JSAF）は、VISの学部向けのGlobal Partnerとして大学のページに載っています。
Global Partnerの学生は所属大学の推薦状が要り、費用の取り決めは別なので、所属大学かVISの担当に確かめるよう大学は書いています。

大学院には授業料が免除になる交換があります。
デュークの大学院の交換協定では、授業料の全額か一部をふつう奨学金でまかないます。
明治大学大学院政治経済学研究科は、デュークのアジア太平洋研究所（Asian/Pacific Studies Institute）に、留学先の授業料を免除して1名ほどを送る募集を出しています。
文部科学省のトビタテ留学JAPANの留学図鑑には、ダブルディグリーの制度でデュークの工学部の修士課程を1年で終えた日本人学生の体験が載っています。

ほかの大学の協定は、どれも学部生の一般的な交換とは別のものです。

早稲田大学は2005年から大学間の協定がありますが、一覧の学生交換の欄に印がありません。学生交換の協定は比較法研究所とデュークの法科大学院の部局どうしのものです。
慶應義塾大学は経営管理研究科（KBS）とデュークのビジネススクールの協定です。
名古屋大学は医学部どうし、東京農工大学は分子遺伝学・微生物学の学科との協定です。

留学先検索には同志社大学や聖路加国際大学などの名前も出てきますが、学部生の交換として募集されているかは確かめられませんでした。
所属大学の募集要項で、デュークの募集があるか、授業料をどちらに払う形かを確かめてください。
